Founded in 1825 , the Society of Calvados Boulard has been passed from generation to generation . The small company founded by Pierre -Auguste Boulard in the early nineteenth century , has become through the work and passion of his descendants , an internationally renowned company . The tour of the distillery Boulard you to the discovery of the production of Calvados Boulard. From the apple to the barrel , each stage of manufacture of Calvados Boulard no more secrets for you

Calvados Boulard has been a family affair for over 170 years !

Since the days of Pierre-Auguste, the company founder, five generations of the Boulard family have taken on the running of this family business, which has gone on to become an internationally renowned company. Each generation has left its own personal seal upon the business. This close, powerful and durable link makes the Boulard family one of the few to be able to include both men and fruit in its family tree !

In the heart of the apple orchards of the Pays d'Auge, and in particular in Boulard's one, the leading Calvados is covered by the Pays d'Auge appellation. Boulard, leader in volume terms in the top-of-the-range Calvados market, some 80% of Calvados Boulard's production is exported to the four corners of the earth.

A highly successful brand, Boulard is also the leading Calvados in terms of export sales. This willingness to seek out new markets emerged very early on in the company's history, with the first exports recorded at the beginning of the 20th century. This has since been expanded and developed on a daily basis, with marketing and advertising activities focused on targeting new consumers and developing original new products.

Coeur de Lion Estate Discover the richness of calvados, its history and production secrets while visiting our distillery !

The Coeur de Lion estate is located in the hearth of “Pays d’Auge” area in an old Norman farm whose architecture is typical of the 17th century architecture of the Auge area.

Our welcome with its personal touch will tell you about the versatility and history of Norman cider and apple brandy making (cider, peary, pommeau and calvados). Thanks to the quality of our production and our large collection of vintage dates calvados anyone, from the beginners to the greatest connoisseurs, can find the bottle they are looking for.

Production of cider of the COEUR DE LION estate is mentionned as early as 1638 in a deed by which the De Moy Family, then owners of the estate, leased it to André de Lannoy, burgher of Pont l´Evêque, who paid a rent of 1600 pounds a year plus two barrels of cider and two of small cider.

A century and a half later, in 1773, it appears on the basis of the testimony of one of the commissioners responsible for tax-collection that one of the main products of the estate was the cider sold at Pont l´Evêque, Rouen and Le Havre.

The story of Drouin calvados began around 1960. There was nothing to indicate that Christian DROUIN the elder, an industrialist from Rouen, was destined to make a career in spirits. Nothing, that is, apart his taste for good food and good wines. When he bought a farm in Gonneville he decided to use the cider-apple orchards to produce calvados. His aims were simple : produce a top-quality spirit, the best.

"My father transmitted me the calvados virus", says the younger Christian DROUIN, who has today given the family business a world-wide reputation. The brand is now sold as far afield as the USA and Japan.

The third generation is now hard at work. It maintains the traditions that have enabled the estate to become one of the 100 "sites of excellence in taste" selected by the ministry for culture. In 1995 the European foundation awarded the estate its European Prestige Grand Prix for the whole of its production, which represents the quintessence of calvados.

This attractive slate-roofed château was built in the 16th and 17th centuries and the home of nobility. Among the note-worthy families that lived in the castle are the Bouquetots, the Montgomerys, the young "Tancrède de Rohan", the Bences.

Listed as an historical monument, the Château has been entirely restored by its new owners who have been distilling spirits for three generations.

The apple is the basic ingredient to make quality Calvados. The mild and damp weather and clayed soil of the Pays d'Auge give the Château du Breuil ideal growing conditions for its 22,000 apple trees which surround the castle. The Château du Breuil company produces its own cider, coming from a 100% natural fermentation. Their know-how and experience are the strengths of the Château du Breuil which gives priority to high quality rather to quantity. When cider has reached its proper flavour, distillation can start...

New ! See our apples harvest "live" from our orchards ! (only for groups on booking)

When you will arrive at the Château during October and November, a tour guide will lead you to one of our two orchards. On the spot you will attend the apple harvest commented by our Orchards Manager. Shaking the trees, gathering the apples, choosing the best quality and maturity, sorting and cleaning... You will know all about our “cider-apples”. This visit will so add a perfect and original touch to your Château du Breuil guided tour.

The distillation process takes place between the beginning of winter and June 30th of the following year. To make one liter of Calvados 100% pure alcohol, about 27 kg apples or 20 liters of 5% volume cider are necessary. Unlike Calvados "AOC", Calvados with the AOC "Pays d'Auge" requires cider apples produced in Pays d'Auge area and a double distillation. It makes a finer Calvados, due to the quality of apples produced by the local soil, and to the elimination of the roughiest parts of the alcohol during the distillations. The Château du Breuil makes AOC Pays d'Auge Calvados only.

In the cellars, Calvados ages only in oak casks. The Château du Breuil company chooses its barrels carefully, because the kind, size and age play a very important part in the quality of ageing. The subtle exchanges between wood, air and alcohol give Calvados its smooth flavour and bouquet. Each Calvados is different, each cellar master has his own jealously guarded secret. The delicate and perfect tastes of our Calvados depend less on their old age than on the success of its blending, created by Château du Breuil's cellar master.
